«Синий чулок», сухая педантка, лишённая женственности. «Собранием синих чулок» голландский адмирал Боскавен назвал один из литературных салонов середины XVIII в. в Лондоне, так как известный учёный Стиллингфлит появлялся в этом салоне в синих чулках. Под его влиянием другие, главным образом женщины, поступали так же. Многие из этих женщин умышленно и претенциозно ограничивали свой разговор серьёзными темами, отвергая таким образом тогдашнюю традиционную роль женщины в обществе.
